ADJUSTING THE METERING VALVES AND DETERMINING OIL HEIGHT

OIL LEVEL & METERING VALVE ADJUSTMENTS

If you currently are not bottoming the forks, and would like them to feel plusher in the braking bumps and dive better into turns, you should start by leaving your oil level where it is currently.  Start the Air Tank adjuster knobs at 1 1/2 turns out. You can open the adjusters 1/4 turn out at a time to add plush-ness and make the front dive more and turn sharper.  You can close the adjusters 1/4 turn in at a time to hold the front end up higher in the bumps and slow down the steering.

If you are currently bottoming the forks, raise the oil level (YZ add 3/8”or10 mm) (CR add 15cc) and test at your favorite track and see if the bottoming can be eliminated. Start the adjuster knob at 1 1/2 turns out.  You can close the adjuster to add more bottoming resistance.  If you find you are adjusting the knob to only 1 turn out, add another 1/4” of oil and try it again.

If you continue to bottom after adding (1" for YZ) or (30cc for CR) of oil above the stock height, you need stiffer springs or revalving.  Call me to discuss.

Note:

I start YZ oil height at 3 1/2" for YZ 250 and 3 3/8" oil height for YZ450.  Tank adjustment between 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 turns out.

I start CR oil height at 390cc for CR 250 and 390cc for CR 450.  Tank adjustment between 1 - 1 1/2 turns out.

METERING VALVE ADJUSTMENT RANGE

I find that the final metering valve adjustment ranges from 1 to 4 turns out from full hard.  With good valving and spring selection, the range of adjustment is more like 1  to 2 1/2 turns out.

OVERALL BENEFITS OF THE AIR TANK SYSTEM

Installing the air tanks will make the forks feel plusher regardless of where you set the metering valves.  So when you adjust the metering valves, you adjust the front end ride height, how the bike falls into a corners, and the plush-ness.  The great feature of the tank is that you increase your total range of adjustment.  For instance you can turn the air tank out to help cornering and turn the standard compression adjusters in for bottoming.  Or turn the tank in to hold up in the corners and straights and turn the standard compression adjuster out for plush-ness.
